Since the heat exchange tubes, tube sheet, and shell of a fixed-tube-sheet heat exchanger are welded together, the temperature stress caused by the difference in metal wall temperatures between the heat exchange tubes and the shell (which is actually the difference in thermal expansion between the tubes and the shell) represents its fatal weakness and is also a factor that needs to be taken into account during design. Because in the calculation of the tube sheet for fixed-tube-sheet heat exchangers, the following stresses and forces are checked under various operating conditions with temperature differences: ① the axial stress of the shell σc, ② the axial stress of the heat exchange tubes σt, and ③ the pulling force between the heat exchange tubes and the tube sheet q. If any one of these three does not meet the strength requirements, expansion joints need to be installed.
It depends on the structure of your heat exchanger; if it is a fixed-tube-sheet heat exchanger, a large temperature difference between the tube side and the shell side is required.
