I work in the natural gas pipeline industry. I would like to ask whether it is possible to paint the pipelines themselves when carrying out lightning protection and grounding measures. (Generally, two coats of alkyd iron oxide anti-rust primer and two coats of alkyd yellow topcoat are used), and then flat steel is used for grounding. Some people say that painting the pipelines makes them insulating, so grounding is unnecessary; others say it is possible to do so. Therefore, I am seeking advice from everyone here – I hope clear guidelines can be provided :) Thank you
Generally, grounding is done by directly welding it to the pipe, and then painting it.
Isn’t grounding always done by first welding bolts to the pipeline and then installing the ground wire?
The grounding is welded to the pipes, so painting it isn’t a concern. It’s okay
It is described in SH 3097-2000, \"Code for Design of Static Grounding in Petrochemical Industries\". Generally, static grounding must be completed before pipeline painting and insulation work.
The grounding of pipe sections is achieved by directly welding grounding plates to the pipes. These grounding plates must not be painted and must make good contact with the grounding wires. To ensure effective grounding, grounding plates for many pipes are required to be made of stainless steel or galvanized metal
If pipes are not protected against corrosion, don’t they corrode more quickly? ? ?
The current construction methods have been adjusted; pipes are generally required to be painted before installation, while grounding plates need to be welded in advance without any painting
The area where the flange is bridged and the contact points with the grounding plates must not be painted; usually, the paint is removed by grinding before grounding is carried out, and in some cases grounding plates are welded to the flange
