I saw the post about returning home, so I decided to join in the discussion. It seems that everyone has experienced going home during holidays. Do people take trains, buses, planes, or ships? When we went home on holidays back then, we would take trains if possible; if trains weren’t available, we would take buses. Those who lived along the Yangtze River would take boats, which was quite impressive as it allowed them to enjoy the scenery along the river. However, it took a long time to travel by boat, and the speed was low – less than 20 kilometers per hour. Train tickets could be purchased at half price with a student ID, but this discount didn’t apply to buses or ships. That was also a kind of discount back then. I’m not sure if it still exists nowadays. There weren’t many direct trains back then; many students from other places, especially those from other provinces, had to go to cities like Zhengzhou, Xuzhou, Beijing, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Xi’an to buy tickets before they could travel. Things are much better now – there are many direct trains from the southwest to the northeast, and the travel time has been reduced by at least half
Time flies; by the year we graduated, high-speed trains were available, and it was only an hour’s journey from my home. When going to school, I bought a station ticket from the school to the train station. Since it’s an intermediate station, there are no seats available. You board the train in the middle of the night, and seats become available around 4 or 5 a.m. It takes about 7 or 8 hours to get home, and a taxi ride takes 5 minutes to get there. Later, with high-speed trains, I found that it only took 4 or 5 hours to get home, which wasn’t as exhausting as the 8 or 9 hours before.
Night buses are the most boring – there’s nothing to see. If there are no seats available, which spot would you choose?
In the middle, it doesn’t prevent others from passing by, and sometimes people get off there as well.
