For the liquid-phase small-volume polypropylene production project involving 60,000 tons of polypropylene, since there is not enough space to locate the flares due to limited site area, some people have proposed eliminating these flares and instead using gas cabinets to collect and reuse the emitted gases. Is this approach feasible?
Personally, I think it’s necessary to use a flare tower; in the event of an accident, if there is a sudden release of large amounts of gas, it’s important to know whether the gas holder can handle that volume of gas, whether the gas holder is at risk, and thus whether using a flare tower is indeed a safer option
Even with a gas holder, the flare is still necessary; it must be there. We use ground torches here, and they don’t take up much space.

It’s not feasible. Just think about it: in the event of a power outage, the pressure in the polymerization reactor, which is around 3.0–3.6 Mpa, would have to be released through the flare system. Could a gas holder withstand such pressure? That didn’t just knock you over in an instant! So the torch is a must!
Our company’s polypropylene plant has gas holders, but it also has flares. The flare is the lifeline of petrochemical plants, as well as their safety.
A small ground torch can be built inside the facility, covering an area of about 10 meters by 10 meters. For a 60,000 tons/year PP plant, how much stable flammable gas emissions can be recovered on a daily basis? Rather, consider the emergency emission amount under accident conditions as the operating condition for the combustion of the above-ground flare.
The torch can be shared with other devices in the company; a recovery unit equipped with a gas tank compressor is installed in the compact unit, and the gas can be sent either to the gas tank or to the public atmospheric tank.
