When producing dioctyl terephthalate using purified terephthalic acid, the final product has an unpleasant odor (not that of isooctanol). Treating it with activated carbon or diatomaceous earth proves ineffective, and cost considerations also need to be taken into account. How can this odor be removed?
Through experimental comparisons conducted by several organizations, it has been found that by using activated carbon and diatomaceous earth along with adjustments to the alcohol removal stripping process – specifically by orienting the openings of the stripping holes upward – it is possible to effectively reduce unpleasant odors.
