Use 20# channel steel to make the foundation for a pump. How should the channel steel be placed to achieve the best load-bearing capacity? The cross-section of 20# channel steel is 200X75; it is placed horizontally, with a hole made in the center of the 200-mm wide side for installing the pump, or it can be placed vertically with a hole made in the center of the 75-mm wide side for installing the pump. What size is your pump? It’s impossible to use just one channel steel, right? Channel steel bears loads in the form of a simply supported beam, and the amount of load it can handle is determined by its bending moment capacity. Since the material is farther from the neutral axis when placed vertically, the bending moment resistance factor is greater in that orientation; therefore, I think it should be placed vertically. It’s a 200-size vertical unit with holes made in the 75 surface. However, the feet of the channel steel are inclined, making it difficult to secure them with bolts, and their area is small. I think the holes should be made both at the top and bottom. Strengthening ribs should be welded near the bolt location.
When it comes to the pump’s steel base, be sure to pay attention to the difference between dynamic stiffness and static stiffness; otherwise, there will be noise once it’s installed and started up

The smaller the contact area between the channel steel and the pump, the better the stress distribution on the channel steel; however, more channel steel will be required, and it’s up to the owner to decide
