For the compressor’s dry gas seal, nitrogen is used as the medium for the pre-seal, main seal, and isolation gas. The normal consumption is 0.7 Nm3/h; during operation, power fluctuations can cause vibration in the shaft on the non-driving side, which triggers a three-out-of-four interlock shutdown mechanism. When operation is resumed, the nitrogen consumption for the dry gas seal becomes 3–4 Nm3/h. I would like to know the reasons for this change in nitrogen consumption; what could be the problem, or what factors might cause nitrogen leakage? (Nitrogen pressure; the valves for the dry gas seal remain unchanged)

I can’t explain the reason either, but for the compressors here, the air supplied to the first-stage seal affects the amount of leakage. To give an example of what happens here: before the compressor is started, 40 cubic meters per hour of air is supplied to the first-stage seal; once the compressor starts operating, the flow rate of air to the seal drops to below 30 cubic meters per hour. .

When the dry gas seal is in operation, an air film can be formed between the sealing surfaces, and the leakage of sealing gas is accordingly reduced. In the closed position, the sealing performance of the dry gas seal is not very good, after all, there are so many shallow dynamic pressure grooves on the moving ring.

Answer: The vibration of the unit has an impact on the seals; in my opinion, the reason for the high leakage rate at present is poor flexibility of the seals, as well as delayed compensation by the static ring, which leads to excessive leakage.
