What is the difference between the feed inlet for the zinc oxide desulfurization reaction at the top of the reactor and one at the bottom of the reactor? Are there any rules that require it to be in that place?

It’s easier to understand if you first look at the structure of the reactor. The reactor is equipped with distribution plates, distributors, and fouling baskets; before the material enters, it must pass through these components first in order to reach the catalyst bed evenly. Therefore, there are specified requirements regarding the height of the catalyst layer. If the material enters from below, it first comes into contact with the ceramic balls, and under the impact of the material, the structure of this ceramic ball layer changes, preventing it from supporting the catalyst and leading to its loss.
Generally, gases flow in from the top and out from the bottom; of course, if the reactor is designed with flow from top to bottom, then the catalyst bed cannot also have flow in the opposite direction
