Are the thermal mass flow meters used by everyone accurate? It is used extensively in air separation, and it has been found that many of the figures are inaccurate. It’s still accurate for measuring differential pressure. The thermal type doesn’t have high requirements for the straight sections before and after it, so how can it deviate so much from the actual value? Is everyone using it correctly?
Well, this product is essentially just a gimmick. There are a few companies in Tangshan that produce it; to manufacture this product, they don’t even need any testing equipment – they simply set the parameters based on experience, and that’s it. It’s okay for casual use, but its name might be a bit intimidating. A mass flow meter… it’s easy for people to associate it with Emerson’s mass flow meters
I’ve also encountered the situation mentioned upstairs – when you simply use the coefficient settings, it’s as if no calibration has been done. In our company, we calibrate using air in a wind tunnel; for smaller diameters, we use actual gases such as argon or nitrogen for calibration. The results obtained are quite accurate. Imported devices probably aren’t that reliable; maybe the parameters provided are inconsistent or the devices are counterfeit
I’ve actually encountered that situation you mentioned. A client said it was very convenient to purchase them – all you had to do was buy them and enter the coefficients. It scared me; that’s equivalent to having no calibration at all, which makes it completely meaningless. Thermal mass flow meters aren’t as unreliable as people think; it’s the small companies without the necessary R&D capabilities that ruin them. The customers aren’t aware of this, which results in a large supply of cheap products that don’t work properly.
