I have a horizontal tank on hand; there is no external pressure applied to it, yet the design includes 4 reinforcement rings on the shell, two of which are connected to the saddle. What is the reason for this?
Did the saddle calculation fail?
This is caused by excessive local stress on the cylinder due to the saddle, so reinforcement rings need to be added near the saddle to reduce the stress.
This situation is common in storage tanks; mainly, during calculations it is determined that the wall thickness of the tank body meets the requirements regarding pressure, but it does not satisfy the requirements concerning the stress and stability of the saddle. To reduce the wall thickness while still ensuring the stability of the equipment, reinforcement rings are used for strengthening, and this approach is frequently applied in the design of oil tanks and similar structures
It is because the stress check at the saddle area failed. Of course, it is possible to avoid using reinforcement rings and instead increase the wall thickness of the cylinder to solve this problem.
Generally, it is because the wall thickness of the cylinder is too thin, and the saddle cannot meet the strength requirements, so reinforcement rings are added.
