Which valves can be directly connected by flanges?

I know that for some valves, it’s not necessary to use short pipes; they can be connected directly via flanges. So, I wonder which valves can be connected in this way and which cannot. I know that check valves and globe valves at the pump outlet can be connected in this manner, as well as the filters and valves at the pump inlet. Can a pressure relief valve and a gate valve be connected directly?
This issue mainly considers the ease of operation and installation/removal. Also, as you mentioned, different types of check valves may require straight pipe sections.
As long as you can pass the bolt through it, making it easy to remove, it’s fine.
