Hello everyone. A valve manufacturer told me that single-acting cylinders can only be used with two-position three-way solenoid valves, while double-acting cylinders can only be used with two-position five-way solenoid valves. I’m not entirely sure, so I wanted to ask if this is indeed the case Why?
That’s right; single-acting cylinders are equipped with two-position three-way solenoid valves, while double-acting cylinders use two-position five-way solenoid valves. What kind of valve are you buying?
Single-acting cylinders have springs inside them. Taking a piston-type cylinder as an example, a double-acting piston cylinder does not have springs inside; it has two air inlets. When air enters one of these inlets, the piston in the cylinder moves forward, while when air enters the other inlet, the piston moves backward. This back-and-forth movement of the piston drives the valve stem to rotate, thereby enabling the valve to open or close. Therefore, the solenoid valve that controls the air supply needs to provide air in alternating directions. By default, the valve in a single-acting piston cylinder is either closed (or open) at the time of manufacture; once air is supplied, the valve opens (or closes). At this point, the bolts inside the cylinder are in a compressed state. If the air supply is cut off, the spring inside the cylinder expands, causing the piston to move backward. Hence, a single-acting cylinder only requires one air inlet, which is what gives it the automatic reset function compared to double-acting cylinders. Single-acting cylinders also consume less air than double-acting cylinders.
This combination is correct; I personally don’t like to use single-acting cylinders.

But the word “only” is a bit too absolute; if I use 5 pieces to block two holes, can’t it then be used in a single-acting configuration? However, we need not get stuck on such a detail; this statement can be considered completely correct. As for why. This is basic knowledge; once you understand the principle of solenoid valves and their structure in the future, it will become clear to you, and there will be no need to understand it further. Just remember it now.
Single-acting cylinders are equipped with 2/3-way solenoid valves, while double-acting cylinders are equipped with 2/5-way solenoid valves.
For the two-passage types, you can block one of the exhaust ports, or they can also be used with single-acting valves
