I’m just starting to work with polymerization. Is suspension polymerization a form of high-pressure polymerization? What is the normal reaction pressure, and what are the potential hazards? What is the cause of the so-called explosion in polymerization reactors?
The reaction pressure is 0.85 MPa; the risks lie in overheating and overpressure, and there are many specific reasons for this. Polymer explosion is also caused by excessive temperature and pressure, resulting in a rapid increase in temperature and pressure.
Suspension polymerization is a high-pressure polymerization process; different models involve different reaction pressures. The most dangerous situation is a power outage – if it is addressed promptly, nothing bad will happen, but if not, serious consequences can arise. Furthermore, a full reactor, explosive polymerization, and monomer leakage can all pose dangers.
Explosion in the polymerization reactor is the most critical issue to be mindful of; it is also the area that requires the most stirring. Otherwise, during polymerization, the heat generated inside cannot be released, leading to an explosion. Therefore, stirring must be carried out during polymerization to allow the heat to escape, and attention must also be paid to temperature control – if the temperature becomes too high, a cooling medium should be introduced into the jacket to lower it.
