Generally, there are two liquid ammonia storage tanks; for safety reasons, one serves as a backup tank while the other is used for normal operations. In the event of a leak in one of the tanks, the liquid ammonia can be collected in the backup tank (which then becomes the tank used for normal operations). Hence, it is required that there always be one backup tank for each main tank. Where does this requirement come from? In Article 5.5.4.6 of the \"Guidelines for the Implementation of Safety Standardization in Ammonia Synthesis Enterprises\", the safety management of liquid ammonia filling and storage processes in enterprises shall meet the following requirements: c) Liquid ammonia storage 1) Electrical equipment in the tank area shall comply with fire and explosion prevention requirements； 2) Remote monitoring and over-limit alarm devices should be installed for the liquid ammonia storage tank ； 3) Liquid ammonia storage tanks larger than 100 m3 shall be equipped with dual safety valves, and the exhaust from these safety valves should be directed to a recovery system or to a flaring system for combustion ； 4) Double shut-off valves shall be installed on the inlet and outlet pipelines of the liquid ammonia storage tank; one of the outlet shut-off valves shall be an emergency shut-off valve ； 5) The liquid ammonia storage area should be equipped with fire dikes, spare accident ammonia tanks, ammonia vapor recovery systems, emergency spraying facilities, and systems for recovering clean wastewater ； According to the spirit of the document, it is required that there must be spare tanks within the tank area, rather than one in use and one as a spare. Of course, if there are only two storage tanks in the entire tank area, then one can be in use while the other is on standby.
