Recently, I encountered some confusion while performing some process calculations related to the polymerization process, and I hope to get some guidance from those with more experience. In a certain process, there are several areas where saltwater cooling is required. One such area is the polymerization monomer receiving tank, where saltwater is used to liquefy the monomer during the receiving phase; the cooling period lasts for 2 hours, and no further cooling is needed after the receiving process is complete. Furthermore, at the end of the polymerization reaction, the reactor needs to be cooled and depressurized using brine; the cooling period lasts for 1 hour, and no further cooling is required after that. In such a batch process, there are significant fluctuations in the amount of cooling required. What considerations should be taken when selecting chillers for the utility systems? How can we avoid situations where the load is low for long periods of time with only high loads at certain times, in order to reduce energy consumption?
I believe that in this case, the choice of refrigerant should still be based on the maximum cooling capacity; if there are large fluctuations, it is possible to consider using multiple smaller cooling units
