Why do so many people think, “What is one’s alma mater?” One’s alma mater is the place where one curses it countless times a day, yet no one else is allowed to say a single negative word about it! ”I won’t criticize my alma mater; no school is perfect. Anyway, it is the one that trained me. ====================================== Take this opportunity to recall my college days and pay tribute to the school’s history. It would be even more fun if we could find a couple of alumni! ====================================== The school traces its origins to the “Beiyang School of Arts and Crafts,” founded in Tianjin in 1903; it is one of the earliest higher engineering institutions established in China. In 1951, during the restructuring of universities across the country, it merged with Beiyang University to form Tianjin University. In 2000, the school’s management system was changed from being under the China National Petroleum Corporation to a model of joint management by the central and local governments. On September 8, 2003, a celebration marking the school’s centenary was held; the Ministry of Education sent a congratulatory message, and the People’s Government of Hebei Province along with the China National Petroleum Corporation signed an agreement for joint management. ====================================== School motto: Cultivate both virtue and skills, be dedicated to work and friendly to others. Meaning of the motto: “Cultivate both virtue and skills” – “Virtue” refers to the \"higher principles,\" representing a positive spirit, the refinement of thoughts, and the requirements for moral cultivation; “Skills” refer to \"knowledge and abilities.\" It implies the need to develop both moral character and knowledge and skills simultaneously. "\"Dedication and camaraderie,\" where the character for \"joy\" is pronounced as \"yào\"; this concept originates from the passage in The Book of Rites・The Treatise on Learning: \"After one year, one should be able to distinguish right from wrong; after three years, one should possess dedication and a spirit of camaraderie.\" Dedication refers to focusing on one’s studies, while a love for working with others means being willing to engage in mutual learning with friends. These concepts can be further expanded: dedication – students focusing on their studies and loving their field of study; faculty members dedicating themselves to education and fostering a spirit of diligence and rigor. A love for working with others – promoting a spirit of cooperation and teamwork, as well as an attitude of unity and pragmatism. Appendix: This is the new campus! This is the school motto plaque; it’s an item that’s been around for decades. This is the library in the old campus; there are dance sessions organized by the dance club in the evenings. That was the earliest square dancing performance I ever saw! I won’t mention the school’s name; those who are interested can guess it themselves. You can look for pictures online, and everyone is welcome to discuss as well. Alumni can come and share their memories too!
