What does a software connection of a computer system in the logic diagram of an instrument control system mean?
Soft connections are generally associated with soft bypasses and are used in SIS control systems. Simply put, it’s a sequential action with many conditional steps; all of these conditions are of an ‘or’ type. However, one of the conditional steps involves a ‘two-out-of-three’ logic. When you bypass the ‘or’ relationship among all the conditions, this is called soft bypassing, and such a connection is referred to as a soft connection. A soft connection is introduced in contrast to a hard connection; a hard connection transmits signals through wire connections, while a soft connection transmits signals via software (programs). For example, in the past, relays were used to perform logical operations, with signals being transmitted from one relay to another through wires. Today, logical operations are all carried out within the computer, and the connections between its signals are soft connections.
