Now the factory plans to consolidate all the instruments on site onto a central control computer for real-time display and monitoring; it is intended solely for monitoring purposes, without the need for feedback control. Currently, the main instruments include pressure gauges, flow meters, level gauges, and thermometers. Some of these instruments display readings directly on a dial, while others are connected to digital displays for showing the readings. The factory currently does not have a central control computer. What work needs to be done if all the data displayed on the instruments is to be gathered and shown on one computer? What is the general process? Is a PLC or DCS control system needed, or some other approach? What software is generally used on the central control computer? Can the data on the digital display be sent directly to a computer, or output to a DCS or PLC?

Displaying the information is quite simple: it can be done via a computer display or through touch screen control. The pointer-type instruments need to be replaced with those that have an output signal function. As for the display itself, it’s necessary to determine whether it has communication capabilities; if not, a communication module needs to be added or the instrument replaced. A simpler approach is to find a company that can come to your site and carry out such an integrated control solution, replacing all the components that need to be changed at once. First, count the number of points; if there are 1000 points or more, go straight for a DCS system. Those that use quadratic displays can be connected directly to the DCS cabinet. On-site pressure gauges (without remote transmission functionality) and bimetallic thermometers cannot be integrated into the system. Among domestic DCS systems, HaliTech and Zhejiang University Control Systems are widely used; their prices are relatively low, and they are easy to configure and use. I have been using them since 2008 without any problems. For future projects such as new constructions or renovations, I buy some modules myself and configure them on my own, which is more cost-effective.
