I’m not sure about the specific process either. . MTBE cracking is a reverse reaction that requires a catalyst. It’s hard to say something about the butanol cracking you mentioned. It is a process of dehydration; I’m not exactly sure

When I used to work at Dongguangyang Pharmaceutical Research Institute, I would buy reagent-grade material with a purity of 99.8%, and by using a glass distillation tower – the kind used in laboratories – and performing repeated distillations, it was possible to achieve a purity of 99.999%. Five liters could be distilled at a time.
