How should the feed inlet of an asphalt storage tank be designed?

I’ve never worked with asphalt before. When I observed the tank area of an asphalt production facility, I noticed that the inlet pipelines all used a high-entry method from the top of the tanks. I would like to ask the experts here: what is the purpose of such a design? Are there any guidelines or standards to follow? Also, what are the advantages of using a plug valve for the valve connected to the tank extraction pipeline?

For high-temperature oil products, they are introduced into the tank from the top and then sprayed onto the tank walls; this is done mainly to prevent boiling up when the high-temperature oil comes into contact with colder oil if it were introduced from below. As for why plug valves are used, it’s not clear – plug valves are generally used for gaseous media, and their valve bodies are relatively heavy.
Feeding from above is feasible, but the pipes inside the tank should not be too long, as this can lead to blockages at the inlet, especially when the softening point of the asphalt is high
