I need to understand the various types of instruments used in atmospheric and vacuum distillation, especially flowmeters and control valves. Please help me out. It would be great if we could discuss the specific locations where these instruments should be installed, the types of flowmeters or valves that are suitable, any problems that may arise, and which manufacturers are recommended. Main characteristics of atmospheric and vacuum distillation: high temperature, high viscosity; some fluids may contain naphthenic acids, resulting in corrosion. 1. Control valve: For viscous media, eccentric rotary valve ; High-pressure differential viscous media, angle valve. 2. Flow meters: For viscous media – wedge or rectangular flow meters with flushing oil, target-type flow meters, etc. A orifice plate + differential pressure to inject isolation fluid method can also be used. 3. Low flow rate: Rotor. 4. Fuel oil: Quality. 5. Atmospheric pressure tower: double flange for flushing oil, ordinary differential pressure + isolation fluid, radioactive level gauge. 6. Pressure reduction tower level: ordinary differential pressure + isolation fluid, radioactive level gauge. For media containing naphthenic acids, 316L material is selected.

When measuring pressure in media containing naphthenic acids, is it suitable to use a pressure transmitter with a 316L diaphragm? Or should I opt for one with a Hastelloy C or tantalum diaphragm? 2. Should high-reliability (or imported) valves be used for any critical parts of the valves? Should oil-related valves use soft seals or hard seals? 3. Is a mass flow meter used because of measurement requirements? Does crude oil require a mass flow meter, and do the products also require one?
You must be referring to the diaphragm of a capillary pressure transmitter, right? 316L is definitely sufficient, as there is no flow of medium here. As for Hastelloy C or tantalum, it’s simply a waste! It’s not necessary. As long as the valve is purchased from a reputable manufacturer, there is no issue at all with using hard-sealed valves in atmospheric and vacuum distillation units. 3. What I mean is that for the fuel oil in heating furnaces, a mass flow meter is the best choice; there are many options for other types of flow meters, but I think a mass flow meter is the best.
