The energy-saving system for large-scale steam injection in delayed coking uses specialized equipment to atomize saturated water into micron-sized droplets, thereby using this atomized saturated water instead of steam as the medium for large-scale steam injection. It prevents the risk of accidents caused by local vaporization and rapid volume expansion when water enters the coke layer, leading to coke explosion and tower blockage; it also ensures more uniform cooling of the coke layer, thereby reducing the impact of temperature stress on the tower walls. The main advantages of this system: 1. High safety, as it prevents accidents such as charring and sudden cooling of the coke tower walls. 2. The steam pipeline network experiences minimal fluctuations, reducing the disturbances caused to it by operations during large-scale steam injection in the coke tower. 3. It has good steam conservation effects and excellent economic benefits. 4. Eliminate water hammer and prevent vibration in steam pipelines. 5. It is easy to operate and highly controllable, reducing the workload for operators. This process is equipped with a dedicated SS control system that automatically controls the entire large-scale steam injection process. During this process, the flow rate of superheated steam and the flow rate of deoxygenated water used as a substitute for steam are adjusted based on the pressure at the top of the coke tower and the cooling rate of its walls, thereby keeping the rate of temperature drop along the walls of the coke tower as well as the pressure at its top within acceptable ranges. Currently, the implementation of the project to replace steam with water for large-scale steam injection in Changling Branch’s coking unit is progressing well. Each large-scale steam injection cycle per tower allows for the savings of 13.8 tons of steam; over the course of a year, the two coking towers can save 4,830 tons of 1.0 MPa superheated steam, which reduces the unit’s energy consumption by 367 tEO/year – demonstrating significant energy-saving effects. During the high-pressure steam injection period, the control system and atomizer operated normally, with no water hammer or abnormal vibrations in the coke tower observed.
