Why does the Doctor test fail for condensate oil with a sulfur content of over 2600 after hydrogenation? After hydrogenation, the sulfur content of the product is less than 10 ppm, and it turns orange-red in the Drab test.
The Drabek test is primarily used to detect thiol sulfur in oils. If the sulfur content is below 10 ppm, the Drabek test fails, indicating that the thiol sulfur has not been removed; this suggests that the hydrogenation reaction was not thorough enough. Adjusting the process parameters, such as increasing the temperature or pressure, should resolve the issue

Generally, levels below 10 ppm are considered acceptable by experts, but ours didn’t meet that standard. We have just replaced the catalyst, and the degree of hydrogenation is fine; it’s possible that side reactions occurred. As for how thiol sulfur was formed, we’re not sure!
