After a shutdown in March, the oxygen content in chlorine decreased from 0.73% before the shutdown to 0.69% after it resumed operation. Although it’s within the acceptable error range, our managers are idiots (A-C); they won’t overlook even a 0.01% change. The chloride content in the brine also decreased, from 2.5 g/L to 2.2 g/L. All other conditions of the electrolyzer remain unchanged; the current (at full load), the amount of acid added, and so on are all the same as before shutdown. There is a direct relationship between chlorates and the oxygen content in chlorine: the higher the concentration of chlorates in seawater, the higher the oxygen content in chlorine. This is because oxygen is a by-product of electrolysis at the anode involving chlorate ions; the oxygen evolution potential for chlorate ions is lower than that for chloride ions, so oxygen is produced more easily under the same conditions.
