Dear experts, the pumps in one of our units were originally designed to operate one at a time with another as a backup. To increase the flow rate, we are now running two pumps at once. I wonder if this will have any impact on the inlet pipes? Please give me some advice! ! !
When two pumps of the same specification are operated in parallel, the diameter of the inlet manifold needs to be increased.
Personally, I don’t think there should be any problems; it’s just that the flow rate is high. Of course, the thicker the inlet pipeline, the higher the flow rate will be. But if you don’t make any changes, it won’t be a big issue. This is just my suggestion for reference only
The key is to properly distribute the flow rate between the two pumps.
There should be no major problems. As the flow rate increases, the inlet pressure drop will rise; as long as the pump’s NPSHA is sufficient, there will be no issues.
There will be issues with traffic competition, and the outlet pressure and efficiency of the two pumps will also differ.
Potential problems that may arise when two pumps are operated simultaneously: 1. The inlet flow velocity increases, the resistance index rises, and the net positive suction head may become insufficient (requiring an increase in pipe diameter). 2. Pumps that are closer to the tank will draw away the flow from the pumps that are further away, which may cause the latter to run at half speed. 3. The exit flow velocity increases, and the resistance index rises. In summary, a simple solution is to provide an additional inlet pipe on the tank (with a certain distance between the two inlet pipes) so that they do not interfere with each other; each pump should use its own separate inlet pipe.
It’s fine once the inlet and outlet pipelines are in flow; generally there are no issues, as during the reverse operation of the pumps, both pumps will operate simultaneously
It has an impact on the pipes, as the force of impact is significant; however, the design takes this into account by providing a margin, so running two pumps will have some effect, but it’s not a major issue.
Parallel operation should not pose too many problems; one just needs to be aware that the flow rate and velocity increase, but it’s not exactly 1+1=2
