During operation of the Texaco single-nozzle unit, the gas composition is abnormal, while all other parameters are normal. The managers keep saying that the atomization is poor; after waiting for some time, things return to normal. What exactly constitutes poor atomization?
There are two reasons for poor atomization of the burners at the beginning of operation: ① The load on the gasification furnace is low, not reaching the normal operating level. Under specific burner conditions, the load does not increase, resulting in a low pressure difference across the burner; this leads to a low flow rate of oxygen exiting the burner nozzles, thereby reducing the effectiveness of oxygen in atomizing the coal slurry. As a result, the coal slurry particles become uneven and larger in size. The combustion of this coal mist inside the furnace is delayed, and some of the coal mist fails to react fully before being carried out of the combustion chamber by the process gas. This is what causes poor atomization of the burners at low furnace loads – it leads to process gas with substandard composition, as well as high amounts of slag and residual carbon. ②Secondly, there is the issue of the atomization angle at the tip of the new burner. During the repair or manufacturing process of the burner, the application of wear-resistant materials to the burner tip or welding operations may result in a slight reduction of the atomization angle. After operation for some time, the burner tip is subjected to erosion by oxygen and coal slurry – a three-phase fluid consisting of gas, solid, and liquid – which causes the atomization angle to increase, thereby improving the atomization effect of the coal slurry.
