I work in a chemical plant; previously I was involved in management tasks, but I want to learn some technical skills. I have a basic understanding of instrumentation. The plant is equipped with many large-scale devices, and there are numerous maintenance issues associated with them. I want to learn the skills needed to maintain these devices. I plan to start by studying diagrams, but I’m not sure where to begin, as I’ve almost forgotten everything I learned in school. . . . In middle age, one feels a strong sense of crisis; one needs to have a special skill in order to make a living, haha. Installing a complete set of instruments is a rather complicated task; it is necessary to figure out the locations of all the instrument measurement points, the locations of the valves (usually small cylinders), and the function of each one. It is also necessary to understand the schematic diagram of the control cabinet, as well as be clear about everything inside it. It is necessary to clarify the connection from the instruments on the machine to the control cabinet circuits. Sometimes analysis also needs to be carried out in conjunction with the manufacturing process, and it is closely related to machinery; therefore, it is necessary to understand the entire operation sequence of the machine. There aren’t many secrets; it’s just about staying on the site, observing more, conducting more tests and analyses, making judgments, and dealing with problems. As you handle more issues, your experience grows, and eventually you come to understand things that are difficult to grasp theoretically.
The approach of simplifying complexity involves measuring and analyzing each control loop one by one to understand them thoroughly, and then figuring out the relationships between the relevant parameters.
