For our denitration project, we used an electromagnetic flowmeter equipped with an ammonia solution; its electrodes are made of 316L material, and all the necessary components such as grounding rings are already in place. Now, due to process requirements, it has been changed to a urea solution; the pipelines and other components remain unchanged, but the flow meter is not sending any signals. Since no reason could be found, the medium in the pipeline was changed back to ammonia, and a flow signal appeared again. When switching back to the urea solution, it’s gone again. I’m completely puzzled and can only turn to fellow sailors for help.

Although I don’t know the specific data for urea solutions, in situations where such solutions are used, electromagnetic flowmeters are always chosen for this purpose, and there are no issues with that. Electromagnetic flowmeters are suitable for measuring the flow rate of urea solutions.
For gun flow control, we use rotors. Both liquid ammonia and urea are non-conductive; the ammonia solution you used before was a mixture, so an electromagnetic method can be applied – no further explanation needed!
But isn’t urea solution conductive? The concentration of the urea solution we use is 5%-10%
Is your urea prepared using pure water? If so, you should replace the flow meter
In this case, there is usually no issue with the electromagnetic aspects; check whether the medium is conductive
Do some parameters of the flow meter need to be reset after changing the medium?
Pure water cannot be used at the project site. I asked the manufacturer, and they couldn’t explain it either; it’s confusing
