Customers who use fatty acid methyl ester ethoxylates FMEE and FMES as refining enzymes or pretreatment additives should note that an increasing number of customers are reporting that FMEE and FMES contain large amounts of nonylphenol APEO, which poses significant problems for textile printing and dyeing enterprises. Currently, children’s clothing and medical supplies exported to the EU, the US, Japan, as well as those sold in the domestic market are subject to strict requirements regarding APEO testing standards for fabrics; therefore, the domestic textile auxiliaries industry should use FMEE and FMES with caution. FMES, a fatty acid methyl ester ethoxylate sulfate, not only contains APEO but also has a high phosphorus content; the total phosphorus level in this product reaches 5500 ppm. Excessive use of it results in wastewater phosphorus levels that exceed the **specified emission standards. As specified in the \"Emission Standards for Water Pollutants from the Textile Dyeing and Finishing Industry\" established by the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau, the allowable emission concentration of total phosphorus is 0.5 ppm, while the phosphorus content in FMES is more than 11,000 times higher than this limit. FMEE and FMES also do not offer good cost-performance ratios. They are generally used as degreasing and refining agents; fabrics treated with FMEE have significantly lower brightness, and their fluffiness is inferior to that of AEO and isohydroxy alkoxy ethers, yet their price is much higher ; FMES has a lower efficiency, and its raw material costs are high; therefore, using FMEE and FMES as pretreatment materials also results in a significant increase in costs. FMEE and FMES promote themselves as eco-friendly products, but in reality they are not environmentally friendly. Their oil- and wax-removal capabilities are also greatly exaggerated; due to such excessive marketing, their actual cost-performance ratio is very poor. Using FMEE and FMES only increases costs.
