The coagulation reaction can not only remove colloidal particles in wastewater as well as surfactants adsorbed on their surfaces, but it can also form insoluble precipitates with surfactants dissolved in the aqueous phase. Coagulants commonly used in the treatment of surfactant wastewater include iron salts, aluminum salts and their polymers, as well as various organic coagulants. Although the coagulation method has low treatment costs and a mature process, it requires a large amount of space, uses significant quantities of chemicals, and generates plenty of waste residues and sludge. It must often be used in combination with other treatment methods to achieve complete removal; it is generally employed as a pretreatment step for treating wastewater containing high concentrations of surfactants
