Why do the backup caps on centrifugal pump impellers come in both clockwise and counter-clockwise orientations? During the inspection, it was found that for many self-priming pumps and single-stage centrifugal pumps, the caps on the impellers were threaded in the same direction as the rotation direction of the impellers. Logically, it should work in the opposite direction to the pump impeller in order to help prevent the cap from loosening.
For small pumps, the preload is usually sufficient, so the nuts won’t come loose
