The methanization technology for coke oven gas developed by the Southwest Research Institute has been recognized as a key supporting technology for clean production in the petrochemical industry. On June 28, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and the China Chemical Industry Environmental Protection Association announced the key supporting technologies (equipment) for environmental protection and clean production in the petrochemical industry, and the technology for producing natural gas through the methanization of coke oven gas developed by the Southwest Research Institute was included among them. The Southwest Research Institute was the first in China to carry out research and development on technologies for producing natural gas from coke oven gas through methanization. It developed efficient and multi-functional methanization catalysts, as well as energy-saving methanization processes with a low circulation ratio. By integrating these technologies, it created a comprehensive set of processes for the deep purification of coke oven gas, followed by methanization and gas separation to produce SNG/CNG/LNG. The institute adopted an integrated approach that included technology licensing, engineering design, catalyst production, design and manufacturing of key equipment, as well as overall project management, in order to implement and disseminate these technologies. To date, more than 20 such systems have been licensed in China, giving the institute the highest market share. The total volume of coke oven gas recovered each year amounts to 7 billion standard cubic meters, which can be used to produce 3 billion standard cubic meters of natural gas per year – equivalent to 3.64 million tons of standard coal. This approach also helps to reduce emissions by 6,000 tons of SO2, as well as various harmful substances such as benzene, naphthalene, dust, and tar. This achievement was evaluated in 2015 by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, and its technology was deemed to be at an \"internationally leading level\"; it won the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation as well as the China Patent Excellence Award.
