Why do the bearings of liquid ammonia shield pumps have axial grooves? What is the bearing lubricant and cooling medium?
That is the channel for pumping a medium to lubricate the graphite bearings.

The sliding bearings of shielded pumps are made of silicon carbide, SIC; the grooves are used for lubrication, with the medium transported by the pump itself being used for cooling and lubrication

Not all the bearings in shielded pumps are made of SIC; there are other materials as well.....
