If a stripping column experiences a surge, the main consequence is a decrease in the initial boiling point; there are no other major negative effects. However, if the medium causing the surge has an indirect impact on the distillation column, it can lead to minor surges in that column as well, resulting in a decline in separation accuracy. The main reason is that the liquid level in the stripping tower is too low, which leads to an excessively high temperature of the stripping medium and results in tower flooding.
An excessive flow of stripping steam in the stripper can cause flooding of the stripper. After flooding occurs, the heavier components move upward to the upper part of the distillation column, which leads to an increase in the dry point of the material at the top of the distillation column as well as an increase in the pressure there. It is necessary to increase the recirculation flow or cold return flow at the top of the distillation column in order to control the temperature there, reduce the flow of stripping steam, and lower the temperature of the layer from which light diesel is extracted.
