Sharing of experiences and lessons from the 2016 Chemical Engineering professional examination

It was my first time taking the Certified Public Accountant exam this year, and I have some profound thoughts to share with everyone: 1. The exam rules are bizarre – on the first day, we weren’t allowed to use the Tian Da edition of review materials, and later on, even the exercise books published by the association were prohibited from use; the examiners didn’t enforce the rules properly； 2. There is an increasing emphasis on standards, and the scope of examination topics is also expanding; many of the questions in the afternoon relate to these standards, requiring one to find the exact wording. However, if it’s used in daily work, one should be able to handle it fairly quickly. In addition to the traditional topics, this year there were also many questions related to evaporation, sedimentation, and centrifugation. On the afternoon of the second day, there were questions on liquid-liquid separation (I don’t know how to calculate this; using the sedimentation method doesn’t yield an answer, which wasted time. If anyone knows how to calculate it, please share it…). There were also quite a number of questions related to energy consumption metrics ； 3. Overanalyzing things – the exams on the first day involved many conceptual topics, so it was necessary to read the material to understand their exact meanings. When answering multiple-choice questions, I hesitated because I wasn’t sure, which led to repeated searches and wasted a lot of time ； 4. The speed at which questions are answered must be increased; there should be no hesitation. On the first day, for the multiple-choice questions, I failed to give up promptly on some of them because I couldn’t work out the answers, which left me with very little time left. The same was true for the case studies on the second day. I felt that there were several questions related to heat transfer that required using temperature iteration methods, but I couldn’t choose the correct options, and this affected my mood while doing the questions. I think that during regular practice, one should simulate the exam environment by writing down the steps taken to solve problems; this way, during the actual exam, one won’t lose confidence in their calculations of U, T, R, and so on. 4. Emotion control. In the examination room, there are those who submit their papers early. In the morning, less than two hours into the exam, one girl submitted her paper; I had only completed half of it at that point, and I became a bit panicked. I managed to calm down by filling in the answer sheet, and it helped me feel better. One shouldn’t let others affect oneself. In the afternoon, that girl didn’t show up at all… 5. Take the exam seriously. If you want to pursue a degree in chemical engineering, it’s important to prepare thoroughly. Spend time reading books when you have it, build a solid foundation in theory, and work on deriving formulas more often – this will be helpful for both making choices and performing calculations.
