The medium being measured is water, and it is installed in a vertical pipe with the water flowing from top to bottom. What will be the results of such installation? Will the flow rate increase or decrease? I’m confused and hope experts can provide an answer
I’ve never seen it installed this way; the usual approach is for the medium to flow from bottom to top, as flowing from top to bottom can lead to incomplete filling of the tube, making measurement impossible.
As far as I know, orifice plates are generally installed horizontally; I haven’t encountered any cases of them being installed vertically yet. In your situation, the water flows from top to bottom, and under the effect of gravity, the flow velocity may increase, which in turn leads to a greater differential pressure and an increased flow rate. It’s also possible that gases are present in the fluid; this is just my speculation, and the actual situation will have to be determined after it’s put into use. It is recommended to install it at a relatively low position on the horizontal pipe, so that the pipe is filled with liquid for accurate measurement.

For vertical installation, the flow should be from bottom to top; installing it in this way may result in incomplete filling of the pipe as well as the presence of bubbles. If the outlet of the pipe at the measurement point is far enough away to ensure sufficient pressure behind it, then the pipe will be fully filled, and there won’t be much of a problem

Yes! I’ve also never seen orifice flow meters installed vertically; they are usually installed horizontally
