Insulated joints are installed at the outlet of natural gas processing units on the ground; since the skid-mounted units are already grounded, is it still necessary to equip the insulated joints with surge protection devices? What method to use?
It is needed. There are two types of sources of surges: external surges and internal surges. Externally, it is mainly lightning surge overvoltage. A surge protector can be installed.
Why are so many overhead insulated joints not equipped with surge protection devices these days? Does this mean that surge protectors must be installed on all insulated joints, whether they are installed above ground or underground? What are the types of surge protectors used for surface insulation joints?

Install equipotential isolation devices, as the resistance value of the insulation joints is only around 10 ohms. Breakdown is a common occurrence. The equipotential isolation device is connected across the two sides of the insulating joint, with one side grounded; it breaks down when a large surge current occurs, and then the current is directed into the ground, thereby protecting the insulating joint.
