Pumps that are in normal standby condition, especially high-pressure feed pumps, need to have their shafts rotated 180° daily to prevent the shaft from bending, to avoid rusting of the moving parts, and to ensure even lubrication of the bearings. However, during the project construction period, some pumps were installed in place from the start, and at that time the contractor had not yet been awarded the contract – so how were these pumps rotated? What are the consequences of not rotating the turbine during construction?
Is it necessary to turn the shaft daily? Can frequent shaft turning cause damage such as dry grinding to bearings, mechanical seals, packing, etc.? I think once I figure this out, I’ll be able to schedule the turning time properly!
Turning the engine 2-3 times a day won’t cause any problems; it’s not doing that that will lead to issues!
1. There is no need to turn the shaft so frequently; if the equipment is not in use, turning it once a month is sufficient. However, attention must be paid to the angle, ensuring that it does not coincide with the position from the previous time. 2. For relatively important or large-scale, high-precision equipment, the frequency of turning the shafts can be increased appropriately; it is advisable to keep a record (in case it remains idle for a long time). 3. Lubricant must be available before turning the machine
There’s no need to do it once a day; we do it once a week as part of a standardized process. Complete it at the scheduled time and location, and keep proper records. The standby pumps should be started up intermittently on a monthly or quarterly basis to ensure that the backup equipment remains in good condition at all times.
