The activated sludge process is currently the most commonly used method for treating coking wastewater. One of the major challenges in this treatment process is the problem of foam formation. Coking wastewater includes various types of waste such as wastewater from material preparation, cooking processes, condensation, bleaching, pulp washing, and screening. The foam issue is particularly prominent in wastewater treatment. There are physical treatment methods available (such as mechanical foam elimination), as well as chemical treatment methods (such as the use of appropriate foam suppressants). Compared to physical methods, chemical treatment methods are increasingly widely used due to their ease of operation and the fact that they do not require large initial investments. The foam generated by wastewater generally falls into two categories: biological foam and chemical foam. There are many reasons for foam formation; for example, surfactants present in the water, turbulence, excessive stirring, uneven stirring speeds, and vibration-induced spraying are all factors that can lead to foam formation. In some plants, the aeration tanks are covered with a thick layer of foam, and foam also abounds throughout the papermaking wastewater treatment process – all because the foam isn’t removed in a timely manner. The simplest and most cost-effective method for quickly eliminating foam is to use water treatment defoamers. Silicone defoamers are generally used for this purpose, as they are inexpensive. Not only do they possess excellent defoaming capabilities, but they also have the advantages of chemical stability, physiological inertness, and good performance in both high and low temperatures. They do not affect the properties of the defoaming system itself nor the processing characteristics of the products, which is why they are highly favored by many wastewater treatment manufacturers.
