For pressure vessel flanges equipped with gaskets, where the flange diameter is large, it would be wasteful to use a single sheet metal piece for the gasket; instead, the gasket is formed by joining four semi-panels together. What inspection and testing requirements should be applied to the joints between these panels?
The inspection requirements for butt welds are the same as those for the welds in the main body of the equipment
Since the gasket serves only an anti-corrosion purpose, it can be assembled by piecing together the parts, with only the surface needing to be treated. This is how we do it
Some gaskets serve an anti-corrosion function, while others also bear pressure; for example, some of the gaskets on loop flanges are designed to withstand pressure. It depends on what structure the owner’s bearing ring has; just having light information isn’t enough to determine its structure or its function.
For the seams of the gasket rings that serve a sealing function, surface inspection is usually sufficient. Because the gasket ring is not taken into account in the strength calculation of the flange.
Our approach is not to weld them into a ring and then attach it to the flange; instead, each piece is spot-welded individually to the flange with a 10mm gap between them, and then welded together. In this case, there is no need for non-destructive testing.
