Today, a friend who works at a property management company experienced something firsthand. He was about to finish work at 11:30 a.m. when a resident on the seventh floor, who hadn’t paid his property fees, came to the office to ask why the heating in his home wasn’t working properly. My friend helped him by analyzing various possibilities, including opening valves and releasing air from the system, and he also called the heating company to ask them to increase the pressure of the heating supply. Later, the resident said that there was no heat in the main pipes in his home. My friend suggested that he clean the filters, so he took the resident to a pipe shaft, showed him which one was the filter, how to close the valves, and how to clean them. The resident claimed he could do it himself, so he borrowed a pipe wrench from the property management office and went home to clean the filters. When my friend got home from work, the resident called and said there was a leak in his home. My friend asked what caused it, but the resident kept shouting loudly on the phone. Angered, my friend hung up and then called a plumber and a security guard to go to the resident’s home and turn off the valves to stop the leak. In the afternoon, the wife of the resident from the seventh floor rushed to the property management office, furious, accusing my friend of giving incorrect instructions that had caused the leak. She also cursed loudly. At that time, a resident from the second floor came to the office because water was leaking into their home. After checking, it turned out that water from the seventh floor had leaked through the pipe shaft into the unfinished apartment on the third floor, and then into the newly renovated apartment on the second floor. After the two families talked, the woman from the seventh floor continued to insist that my friend had given wrong instructions and demanded that the property management office take responsibility. It was a chaotic situation that lasted all afternoon. When my friend told me about this incident, he looked very frustrated and said, “How is it that today’s young people know nothing and are also unreasonable?” He then added another incident: in June, the tiles on the roof of the apartment on the seventh floor started leaking water. My friend arranged for someone to come and fix the problem, but the woman from that apartment drove them away after cursing at them. It was only after my friend spoke nicely to the repairman that he agreed to come and fix it again.
