On October 15th, the various awards of the 8th \"Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award,\" selected by the Chinese Chemical Society, were announced in Beijing. Forty outstanding chemical science and technology professionals who won the Achievement Award, Innovation Award, and Youth Award of the 8th \"Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award\" were honored and rewarded. The renowned scientist Dr. Hou Debang was one of the founders of China’s chemical industry, and he made outstanding contributions to the development of the world’s chemical industry, particularly in the field of alkali production. To commemorate Mr. Hou Debang’s contributions to the chemical industry and the development of chemical science and technology, and to encourage and honor future generations, the Chinese Chemical Society established the \"Hou Debang Award for Chemical Science and Technology\" in 1998. In 2001, it was approved and registered by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China as one of the first awards established by private organizations. This award comes with three sub-categories: the Achievement Award, the Innovation Award, and the Youth Award. By 2015, the Chinese Chemical Society had successfully held seven editions of the \"Hou Debang Award for Chemical Science and Technology.\" 110 individuals, including Academician Xu Xi from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Academicians Shen Yinchu, Xu Nanping, and Zhang Suojiang from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, have received this award. Following the evaluation process, as well as public announcement and approval by the executive board meeting, the 8th Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Awards in 2016 recognized 3 winners in the Achievement Award category, 12 in the Innovation Award category, and 25 in the Youth Award category. At the award ceremony, Dai Houliang, President of the Chinese Chemical Society, General Manager, Director, and Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of Sinopec Group, presented the \"Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Achievement Award\" to three individuals including Zong Baoning from Sinopec’s Research Institute of Petrochemicals” ； Academician Li Jinghai, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented the \"Hou Debang Chemical Technology Innovation Award\" to 12 individuals including Wang Chuansheng from Qingdao University of Science and Technology” ； Academician Tan Tianwei, President of Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and Gu Weidong, Vice President of Tongcheng New Materials Group and Chief Safety Officer, presented the \"Hou Debang Young Chemists and Scientists Award\" to 25 individuals including Ma Xiaoxuan from the School of Chemical Engineering at Northwest University. At the award ceremony, Chairman Dai Houliang said that the purpose of the Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award is to inspire chemical science and technology professionals to earnestly implement the strategy of developing the country through science and education, to actively engage in the field of chemical science and technology, to enhance their sense of mission and honor, and to contribute to the development of both the material and spiritual civilization in socialism. We are pleased to see that the awardees of this year’s Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award have made outstanding achievements and contributions in areas such as research and development, technological innovation, and technology transfer. In particular, the outstanding young chemical scientists and engineers selected for the Youth Award will serve as a source of hope and role models for the advancement of chemical science and technology in China. It is hoped that chemical industry scientists and engineers will learn from them, making new and greater contributions to the progress of chemical technology as well as to the comprehensive, rapid, coordinated, and sustainable development of the chemical industry.
