Sketching is the foundation of painting and one of the forms of expression in the visual arts; it possesses its own unique cultural significance and aesthetic concepts. Sketching is a relatively rational form of painting. The deeper an artist’s artistic sensitivity and cultivation, the more profound their ability to express the emotional aspects of human figures and their spiritual beauty, thereby enhancing the impact of the artwork
At the beginning of creating a piece, one must first observe the model carefully (taking into account the model’s physical structure and dynamics as well as one’s own feelings regarding the model). It is also necessary to have a clear idea of the painting steps and the final appearance of the artwork – including the use of black, white, and gray tones, the rhythm of the composition, and the lighting and shading. Once these aspects are determined, the artist can sketch out the structure of the model’s head, neck, and shoulders, along with their dynamic features. Based on the model’s characteristics, the artist can then draw out the main structural contours and facial features
For the second layer of coloring, use dark colors to draw the hair and facial features; use white and gray shades for the darker areas of the skin as well as the colors of the clothing. Depending on the needs of the model or the scene, apply different shades of black to distinguish the hair and facial features
Three levels of depth: start by depicting the colors and facial features, control the brightness of the light areas and the darkness of the dark areas to maintain consistency in the balance of black, white, and gray in the image; gradually enhance the rhythm of the picture (through contrasts between black and white, clarity and blur, texture and space, as well as variations in shape and size). Pay attention to bringing out the liveliness of the model, and also focus on how to handle the textures of different materials (such as hair, skin, eyes, bony structures, and clothing). Focus on depicting the facial features, and then clearly define the body structure and the areas of light and shadow. Pay attention to the variations in the thickness, shape, and strength of the edge lines
