Over the past decade or so of working on hydraulic pump repairs, we have encountered several cases of belt burnout in plunger pumps (including Rexroth plunger pumps, Parker plunger pumps, Daikin plunger pumps, and others). Based on our repair experience, this article provides a detailed explanation of the phenomenon of belt burnout in plunger pumps, including its causes and preventive measures. First: Symptoms of belt burnout in piston pumps. This type of fault is typically characterized by slippage of the pump’s belt, a loud rubbing sound, a decrease in the pump’s rotation speed, the belt bouncing, and a burnt smell. If this situation is detected, the pump should be stopped immediately; the tension of the belt should be adjusted to ensure that it is in proper alignment. Failure to address this promptly can lead to the belt burning out. Second: Analysis of the reasons for the burnout of the plunger pump belt 1. The two pulley grooves are not aligned properly; the deviation between them is too large. As a result, the belt bounces during operation, leading to uneven wear between the belt and the pulley grooves. This reduced contact area accelerates the wear of the belt. 2. The belt is too loose, causing it to slip and resulting in belt burnout. 3. After replacing the belt, the tension of the belt was not adjusted in time due to its elongation, which caused the belt to slip and burn out. 4. The belt model is incorrect; the belt width does not match the groove dimensions of the motor pulley, which prevents the belt from fitting completely into the groove. As a result, the contact area decreases, leading to belt burnout. 5. Oil contamination on the belt reduces the friction coefficient, causing slipping and resulting in belt burnout. 6. Wear in the pulley groove reduces the contact area between the belt and the groove, causing the belt to slip and leading to belt burnout. Third: Preventive measures to prevent belt burnout in plunger pumps 1. Use belts of the specified model and of high quality; if the belt starts slipping due to being too loose, stop the pump immediately and make adjustments. 2. When adjusting the belt, it is required that the two wheels be aligned, with the error not exceeding 2 mm. 3. If oil is found between the pulley and the belt, it should be wiped away. 4. If the adjustment in a straight line from four points is not successful, the position of the motor pulley shaft sleeve should be adjusted to align the two pulleys. 5. Replace the worn pulley.
