Our unit’s atmospheric and vacuum bottom discharge pumps currently use a sealing solution of type 54; due to frequent leaks in this sealing system, the management has requested that a sealing solution of type 62 be installed. Could anyone please let us know if this is feasible? What are the advantages and disadvantages exactly? What are the risks after the changes?
Sure, 54 is a forced-circulation seal with an oil station. 62 is the emergency cooling flush on the atmospheric side of the mechanical seal. There are no issues with the configuration; the addition of 62 is mainly to prevent coking in case of leakage of high-temperature media, and it also serves safety purposes. In my opinion, if there are frequent leaks at 54, the issue with the main seal should be investigated; increasing 62 is only a temporary solution and does not address the root cause.
