Fluidized bed reactors may experience phenomena such as bed choking and dead bed during shutdown or operation. I haven’t been able to understand these issues, so I hope experts can explain what bed choking and dead bed are and how to deal with them.
Bed fouling in a fluidized bed occurs when the fluidizing medium is lost, causing the catalyst to agglomerate within the reactor. There is a condition in catalytic cracking units known as bed blockage: when the fluidizing air (main air) is suddenly interrupted, or when the main air is deliberately stopped for some other reason, the catalyst accumulates throughout the reactor, resulting in a very high dense-phase density and a very low dilute-phase density – this is bed blockage. Extended understanding: A situation in which the fluidization medium is interrupted, the flow rate is low, or uneven flow causes the catalyst to become completely or partially packed up, preventing it from being fluidized.
May I ask how to handle the situation when bed clogging occurs? Should the agent be removed? Can the occurrence of bed stagnation be determined by the densities of the dense phase and the dilute phase?
