Two states, three holes. If the hole numbers are 1, 2, and 3, with 1 representing the air source, 2 representing the output, and 3 representing the exhaust, one state is that 1 and 2 are connected while 3 is isolated; another state is that 1 is isolated while 2 and 3 are connected.

Simply put, a bit is a state; two bits represent two states; On, off (powered, unpowered). A tee is an entrance and exit for channels, while a three-way tee has 3 channels, with 1 entrance and 2 exits. When the solenoid valve is in one state.
