Electric motors are one of the main power generation devices, and it is common for them to burn out. To prevent the motor from burning out during operation, in addition to taking various necessary technical protective measures before starting it up, the following “six tips” are the most effective. First tip: Keep the motor clean. During operation, if dust, moisture, and other debris enter the motor, they can create short-circuit conditions that damage the insulation of the wires, leading to inter-turn short circuits. This increases the current flow, raises the temperature, and can ultimately burn out the motor. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent dust, moisture, and other debris from entering the motor, and the exterior of the motor should also be cleaned regularly to ensure that there is no dust or other debris in its cooling fins, thus maintaining good cooling conditions for the motor. Second tip: Observe carefully and listen attentively; if any unusual odor is detected, stop the machine immediately to check whether the motor is vibrating, making noise, or emitting abnormal smells. While the motor is in operation, especially with high-power motors, it is necessary to regularly check whether the foot bolts, motor end caps, bearing covers, etc., are loose, and whether the grounding system is reliable. If increased vibration, heightened noise, or an unusual odor is detected in the motor, it must be shut down immediately to identify the cause and resolve the fault. Third tip: Keep the operating current of the motor from being too high. The motor can operate under overload conditions due to excessive load, low voltage, or jamming of the machinery it drives. Therefore, while the motor is in operation, it is necessary to regularly check whether the transmission mechanism operates smoothly and reliably ; Is the concentricity of the coupling up to standard? ; Factors such as the flexibility of gear transmission – if any jamming is detected, the machine should be stopped immediately to resolve the issue before it can be restarted. Fourth tip: Regularly inspect and maintain the motor’s control equipment to ensure its proper operation. The technical condition of the motor control equipment plays a decisive role in the proper startup of the motor. Therefore, the control equipment for the motor should be placed in a dry, well-ventilated area that is easy to operate, and dust removal should be carried out regularly. Regularly check whether the contactor contacts, coil core, and various wiring screws are reliable, as well as whether the mechanical parts move smoothly, to maintain them in good working condition and thus ensure the motor operates properly without burning out. Tip 5: Regularly check whether the temperature and temperature rise of the motor in operation are too high. It is also necessary to frequently check whether the motor bearings are overheating or lack oil; if a high temperature rise is detected near the bearings, the machine should be stopped immediately for inspection. Check for cracks, scratches, or damage on the rolling elements and raceway surfaces of the bearing, whether the bearing clearance is too large causing wobbling, and whether the inner ring rotates on the shaft. When the above phenomenon occurs, the bearing must be replaced. Tip 6: Regularly check whether the three-phase currents of the motor are balanced. In a three-phase asynchronous motor, the difference between the current of any one phase and the average value of the currents of the other two phases should not exceed 10%, in order to ensure the safe operation of the motor. If it exceeds this value, it indicates a fault in the motor; the cause must be identified and the fault resolved before the motor can be operated again.
