In the styrene production process, in the tower used for separating benzene from toluene, the color intensity of the toluene at the bottom of the tower exceeds 20. What can be done to address this issue? Urgent!!! I hope someone with experience can share their insights; I would be extremely grateful!!

It may be due to the high content of olefins in toluene; it is recommended to use activated clay, which can help improve the color issue
How can I tell if the olefin content is high? Tests are conducted on a regular basis; this issue occurs at the bottom of the benzene and toluene separation tower. Could I ask you for continuous guidance on this matter? Thank you!
I was wrong; by chroma you mean a platinum-cobalt color code of over 20. I mistook it for a pickling color comparison. A high platinum-cobalt color value usually indicates the presence of impurities with high chroma in the toluene; such impurities are typically separated through a toluene distillation column, with the toluene product coming from the top of the column, while the impurities with high chroma – such as trace solvents and high-boiling-point residues resulting from olefin polymerization – remain at the bottom. Your toluene product comes directly from the bottom of the benzene tower without any separation, and quality issues arise when the feed contains impurities. Several methods: 1. Detect the type of impurities and control trace impurities in the feed ; 2. Distill toluene in the laboratory; if the color of the product obtained is within acceptable limits, then the impurities are the heavier components, and this issue can be resolved by using a separation tower ; 3. In the laboratory, the toluene product can be adsorbed using granular clay, and this should also yield satisfactory results; however, the adsorption capacity of clay is limited, requiring frequent replacement, so it is not a sustainable solution.

Since it is a phenylethylene process, the oil after the reaction is sent to a distillation tower to separate its various components; benzene and toluene are the components that are separated last.
