The standards for building coke ovens can be summarized in six words: strictness, accuracy, cleanliness, flatness, straightness, and uniformity. Strictness – the oven structure must be tight, with proper filling of the mortar. Accuracy – all dimensional values (wall width, opening width, center distance, elevation, etc.) must be precise. Cleanliness – the wall surfaces and air flow channels need to be clean. Flatness – the levelness must meet the required standards. Straightness – the verticality must be correct, and expansion joints must be straight. Uniformity – the mortar must be mixed evenly, and brick joints must also be even.
